We all need to escape the grind and heat of everyday life to recuperate and breathe deeply. The glimpses of peace and quiet in the misty scenes of nature draw us in to get away and explore tranquility.
Happiness and contentment are the mood for my portraits. My family members are the models. I have always been drawn to the human figure, my doodles in my school books were human figures, I majored in anatomy at university, I see faces in random patterns like small bathroom tiles, I like how a few lines or blotches on a flat surface can look like someone you know.
Portraiture is another way of looking at people. I get so involved in the placement of shadows and light that the face is reduced to a pattern. The pattern on the flat surface subsequently re-emerges as the face. The more deeply I delve into these close observations the more the faces become strangers and less familiar.
I am experimenting with my own photos and those from facebook, manipulating them to enhance light, shadows and colours, the way the light falls on their faces reveals emotion and personality. Then I experiment with surfaces, media, size and techniques to produce varying works of these familiar faces.
